Indulgent winter weekends

Winter has well and truly landed – and as temperatures plunge, the temptation to make like a bear and sleep ’til spring is getting stronger and stronger. The air is getting chillier, the nights are getting longer, the shops are getting too crowded in the run up to Christmas… so what can you do to keep the spirits up?

Well…organising a lavish trip away and enjoying a weekend break full of pampering usually does the trick. We’ve picked out some of the top spots around the UK for an indulgent winter weekend. And, as many of them are located in wonderfully secluded locations, we think it’s a great opportunity to start the holiday as soon as you leave the house by using our luxury car hire service.

So whether it’s a last minute Christmas gift or a touch of opulence over the New Year, read on for a few tips to get you on the road to relaxation.

A literary fantastic mansion

Our first suggestion offers the very finest in sumptuous accommodation the North East. Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa is an award-winning, luxurious retreat with a real pedigree, showcasing the best of County Durham.

This gorgeous Georgian mansion won the 2013 North East Tourism ‘Small Hotel of the Year’ award and a look at the impressive property reveals why. Delicious food is available at the hotel’s two restaurants and a full range of high-class spa treatments will ensure your stress melts away. Looking to enjoy a romantic stay at the hotel? You’ll be in good company. The famously mad, bad poet Lord Byron was a one-time guest of the mansion, marrying his sweetheart Annabella Milbanke there… well, she was one of his sweethearts anyway.

A Welsh wonderland

Hop into a Prestige hire car this winter and cruise to a fairytale village on the dramatic Welsh coast. Portmerion is the famously picturesque cliff-side village which has fuelled the imagination of artists and dreamers for years and the wonderful Victorian Castell Deudraeth is the premier hotel at the edge of the town.

With a fantastic exterior, blending elements of the Gothic and Tudor periods and an interior which was renovated in 2001 to bring in the best of contemporary style, the hotel is a truly special place. While the building is something to behold, Portmerion itself will also provide you with some incredible memories. The village, famously used in the TV show ‘The Prisoner’ is jaw-droppingly beautiful and a great choice for a short holiday away.

Star gazing in Hertfordshire

If you’d rather spend your short break enjoying a taste of the glamorous lifestyle then check out a spa break at The Grove in Hertfordshire. The high-end hotel is a favourite haunt for celebrities from around the world.

Set in 300 acres of private gardens, this is the epitome of high-end living. With no less than 12 treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, steam room and heated indoor swimming pool, there are no shortage of opportunities to bask in a bit of opulence at this hotel. Even Kylie Minogue is amongst the many famous faces who have made the journey here to enjoy some serious indulgence.

A funky midwinter weekend away

Next up is something a little different – a place that absolutely fizzles with funky character. If you’re the kind of person who likes to break the mould then the Crazy Bear Hotel at Stadhampton in Oxfordshire could well be for you.

Christmas is all about fun and festivities and it doesn’t get much more fun than the eccentrically decorated Crazy Bear Hotel. The friendly service and eclectic mix of styles available within the renovated sixteenth century public house will make you forget about the cold outside – and the delicious cocktails served at the bar will definitely take the edge off the chill!

Relaxing on the edge

Finally we’ve picked out a bit of a wildcard option. It’s a choice for the adventurous souls whose idea of romance is a rugged coastline, incredible sea-views and the opportunity to snuggle up in front of a cosy warm fire. All that and more is available at the Blue Cabin by the Sea on Scotland’s south-eastern coast.

Accessible only by passing through a smugglers tunnel, we’re talking about a seriously secluded location here – a holiday cottage with a difference. The wonderful little cabin offers a spectacular chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, providing a break from the norm. Some of the other choices may be more luxurious but as night falls to the distant sound of North Sea breakers rolling onto nearby rocks, there are few places where you’ll get the same sense of peace and relaxation. And despite maintaining a rustic feel, you’ll be well insulated against the winter weather outside. It really is a special spot.
