Discover lovely scenery on a day trip from Manchester
However much we enjoy the buzz of the city, we all need a break, and there’s nothing like the freedom of the open road. Drive to Haigh Country Park in Wigan and take your pick of 40 miles of secluded countryside and woodland trails for some time with Mother Nature. Hire a Europcar, load up kids, cases and cameras, head for the M61 and you can be in the Country Park in less than an hour. Once there, you can stroll around lovely woodland paths, or take it easy with a ride on the 15″ gauge railway, which will take you on a fun scenic ride around the woodlands. Parking won’t be a problem as there are two large car parks close to all the attractions.
Take a day trip from Manchester to soak up some history
Take a fascinating tour of one of England’s most important castles. Pontefract Castle was known as the Key to the North, since it was one of the most important fortresses in the country and key site in the English Civil War. It is also believed to be where King Richard II died. You can get there from Manchester all the way on the M62, in about 90 minutes. Although the castle is now in ruins, you can still take the stairs to the top of the motte for brilliant views of Pontefract and beyond. You will find the castle car park well signposted on Beech Hill. Have a great trip!
