Located on the banks of the Rio Tejo (River Tagus) Lisbon is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Portugal’s capital city is easy to navigate and hiring a car is a great and easy way to see all the sights. Car hire is available at Lisbon airport or you can rent a vehicle from one of the many car rental offices in the city.
Where to take a selfie in Lisbon
Whilst on your special trip with your partner, a visit to the Elevador de Santa Justa is not to be missed. This 19th-century lift (with an elegant polished wood interior) will save you the walk up the steep hill from the Baixa area to the Largo do Carmo, where you can take a selfie together overlooking the city from the viewing platform – a lovely way to remember your romantic break.
Kissing in Lisbon
Where’s the best place to kiss in Lisbon? It´s got to be Alfama, with its steep cobbled streets and traditional atmosphere, this is a great place to linger over a coffee or glass of rosé wine in one of the many backstreet cafés and is the perfect location for that first (second or third!) kiss. If you´re looking for a taste of the real Lisbon, visit Alfama early in the morning where you’ll find the locals going about their daily business from market shopping to chatting on street corners.
Where to propose in Lisbon
If you really want to sweep your partner off their feet and are searching for an ideal place to propose in Lisbon, look no further than the Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace in Sintra, just a 30-minute drive away in your hire car). This could possibly be one of the most romantic locations in Europe to propose (the Eiffel Tower is so yesterday!) – ask the love of your life to marry you here and it will certainly be an event to remember. The palace is situated on top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains and proudly stands guard over Lisbon. It can be seen from most locations in the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Palácio da Pena is known as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and can be easily reached in your rental car. Surrounded by a vast forested area, a visit to the Pena Palace is a welcome break from city life and a wonderful place to pop the question.
Don´t miss this
The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is another of the many viewpoints in Lisbon and offers fantastic views over the Alfama and the Tagus river. This is the ideal location for a romantic stroll, with its beautiful small gardens and array of Bougainvillea creeping up the pergola that overlooks the city below. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is also home to the Santa Luzia church which is embellished with traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles.
Lisbon is a truly special city for couples looking for a romantic getaway and offers something for everyone, from culture to cuisine, combined with spectacular views and scenery.
